Big mahalo for Harris. Hawaiian Sign Gallery

About 10 years ago, we found the shop, Hawaiian Sign Gallery at the article of Japanese guidebook “Hawaii Style”.

2008, We went to the front of the shop, but it seemed to close and we gave up openning the door.

The next year, we visited the shop again. The door was open and we went into the shop timidly. The gently and thoughtful owner, Hariis welcomed us with a big smile.

In spite of our poor English, he listened very carefully, and comfirmed our order, the design, size, font of characters.

He had a transportation service to Waikiki Hotels and he never received charges.

This is our first signboard, ukulele style, very popular one.

When he deliverd this signboard at our Condo, our big, exultant, fortunate shouts echoed throunghout the entrance robby.

With the splendid signboard, he served dozen of Reonard’s malasadas, and packing box for bringing to cabin. He had very careful consideration.

We came to love him at once. After that, we visited him every year and got in touch with each other by Email.

Every time we arrived the Oahu, we got rental car and went toward Wahiawa via H1 and H2 at the very beggining.

Every time we visited, he welcomed us with warmest smile. Every time we visited, he listened our unskillful speaking and talked very slowly. We talked about family, travel, hobby, works, and Japanese culture. We think he looked like the very big, warm sunny spot.

He told to us about his Japanese hometown, the small island on the Inland Sea of Japan. He had the very missed expression.

Last year he reported us about the Canada visiting, with magnificent and great natures. He loved mountains as we loved too, so we introduced some Japanese beautiful mountains.

This year, he reported Canada visiting again, and he recommeded digging for the natural fluorite crystals. It looked like very excited!

We cannot believe it was the last Canada visiting for him…

Since our first visiting, every time we gifted Japanese souvenir and he loved all of them.

We considered about the souvenir valiously, and it was very special, happy time for us.

When we moved to our new home and wanted to order his signboard set up for outdoor, that was like Sunny Side signboard at Wahiawa, he prepared the special wood materials for us especially.

At that time, he said to us “It is gift for your home, and no charge is OK!”. He did not receive the charge so we handed it with Japanese souvenir secretly. Looking back now, we think it was one of symbolic episode about his consideration.

At our home, there are many hapiness signboard, and every day we have a good time with thinking of him.

This is seahorse style signboard. We love seahorse and he made very pretty, lovery one for us.

We think its expression looks like him, so we named it “Mr. Harris” and now display at the entrance of my home.

This year he invited us to his home and garden, many many kinds of beautiful flowers and greens! His wife Sharon has very talent about gardens and we believed firmly that his wonderful beautiful designs come from here.

We got so many hapiness, love, friendship hrom him. So… we do not want to believe, we miss him. Please, please rest in peace, Harris. Big mahalo for Harris!
